More of the Story

The Smile High Club decided to take a trip to Omaha August 28-29 to see our friend's band, Funk Trek. We had all sorts of plans to hit the thrift stores and busk downtown but the universe had other plans for us. An hour and a half into the trip, the check engine light goes on, the thermostat is way above high, and there was green slime spewing and smoke billowing out of the hood of the car. At the time, we weren't certain what was causing the smoke and the evacuation process was straight out of a movie. A cracked radiator was the cause of this great adventure.

Cracked Radiator

Having just had a significant amount of money just spent on the car, Melodie was not thrilled about the additional tow and large amount of money spent to replace the radiator and get back on the road. However, she handled it like a champ and kept on smiling high! We rolled on to Omaha and saw Funk Trek rock it at Dundee Days.

Say Cheese!

The adventure continued the next morning when we headed out of town. Just hopping onto I-29, the car dies and we are stranded on the side of the highway.

Stranded on I-29 Ughh...another tow please! I-29 outside of Omaha

But who cares if your stranded on the highway for a few hours when you have instruments! If you are The Smile High Club, you just call it practice time!

A big THANK YOU to Rob Barr, percussionist from Funk Trek for hosting us and coming to keep us company on the highway.

another mudstomp

mudstomp mondays has been an incredible place for us to play and explore our music. the night usually ends with a late night jam on the street. really talented musicians cut loose and try new things. we make up silly songs like, "chunky gravy," "ashes blowing in her hair," and "it's too damn hot." the energy and excitement of this group of people is a lot of fun and we always look forward to seeing out friends from wiseacres, menage twang, sunflower colonels, tin horn molly and all the rest! a big thank you to jacob from tin horn molly who let us try out his washboard. we'll add a washboard to our collection of instruments soon, i am sure!

even thrash metal drummer, adam mitchell aka hammerlord can't resist the energy of mudstomp mondays. adam stops in for a little hammering on the ukulele!

prairie moon summer camp

i taught summer camp out at prairie moon waldorf school in july. my super awesome friend melodie would bring me coffee. the children and staff knew that meant she must be a pretty serious friend if she would drive out to the country to feed my horrible coffee addiction and brighten my day. i told the children about how much fun melodie and i where having making music and explained that it is the fun thing that we do when we hang out. i explained that it would be like them getting together and playing legos (their absolutely most favorite thing they all have in common). they started singing acapella together, making it up as they went along. then i coaxed them into singing a smile high club song for melodie to say thank you for all the coffee. so i now present my darling friends (ethan, finn and angus) in our first commercial.
