The baby's here!

The last time The Smile High Club was out playing music, it was days away from the birth of my(Bekah) baby, Oliver. We played at the Granada when I was "over due" a day.

Chad from Dumptruck Butterlips joins us on stage to sing, "the baby song."

We also managed to get some bucking in. I am happy to report that Melodie was nice enough to carry the bass for me!

Now there's a baby. And Melodie loves him despite the fact that she claims she doesn't like children.

Momma and baby are happy and healthy. We are looking forward to be out and about making music again soon!

Mudstomp

if you know us, you've probably heard us talk about mudstomp mondays. for those who haven't experienced it, it's an event that happens monday nights at the granada in lawrence, ks. from my perspective, it's a bluegrass open mic and jam. but no genre is turned away.

this is where we first started trying out the goofy songs melodie was making up. you can frequently find an eclectic group of musicians, wanting to share their love for music. this neat group of people has been a huge support and foundation for us.

this past week we took a turn headlining. at 11pm each week, a different band plays for an hour, in between the open mic time slots. we were honored to have the oppurtunity to entertain so many of our friends and other musicians who laugh and play along with us.

thank you to everyone who made it a super fun night!

January 2011 Update

The last three months, The Smile High Club has been busy! We have been working on new material and are excited about the growth we have seen in our work. We have tried new songs out for different audiences of all ages. We have seen lots of great music and supported some great local and regional musicians. We are making friends with some really talented, great people.

Brent Barry, who currently hosts an open mic night at Jackpot, has been a huge support as we've tested out our new songs. We tried out our new keyboard/vocal tunes and had a blast! As vocalists, it is always a challenge to find good blend when jumping in front of separate mics. Brent also runs sound for his open mic which proved to be one of our better experiences being able to hear ourselves.

In December, we played for Prairie Moon Waldorf School's Winterlight Faire and enjoyed adding some fun holiday songs and taming our set down for a family friendly audience.

Mudstomp Mondays has been one of our favorites since the summer. We have tried out some new material there as well as played some old favorites on the spot after someone signed us up in hopes of hearing us play. We love the pressure of being thrown on stage unprepared!

Coming up on January 24th, we are so thrilled to finally be dragging out all of our instruments for our full set. We are headlining from 11pm-12am at Mudstomp Mondays. You won't want to miss it! Come party with us and have a great time!
